We asked our registered nurse, Rachael Morrison, some questions about this unique treatment and this is what she had to say.

Rachael with Carboxy Therapy machineHow long have you been performing Carboxy Therapy treatments?

I’ve been carrying out Carboxy Therapy treatments for the last 2 years and it’s one of my favourite treatments to perform in the clinic.

What exactly does the treatment involve?

The treatment involves injecting small, and very safe, amounts of carbon dioxide into the skin. This process induces a cascade of events within the deeper layers of the skin, stimulating cell turnover. Effectively it prompts special growth factors like collagen and elastin to “waken up” and reproduce at a quicker rate.

Why is the stimulation of collagen and elastin so important?

The more collagen and elastin present in the skin, the more youthful and plump the skin looks, giving a brighter and rejuvenated appearance. The whole process allows you to look the best you can be.

So it’s really for those who want to look younger?

No, definitely not. Carboxy Therapy can be an effective treatment for specific skin concerns. It works very well on lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, puffy eyes and dark circles. I have had particularly good results on the neck and jaw area, to help give more definition to the jaw line and reduce the “crepey” effect that some people get on their neck.

Since it involves injecting gas, is it safe?

This treatment is very safe and has been around for many years. Because it uses Carbon Dioxide, it’s a completely natural procedure.

How will I look immediately after treatment?

There is very little down time after the procedure. You may look a little bit blotchy and sometimes pin-prick bruises can develop. However, bruising usually only occurs on the neck as the skin is thinner and more sensitive in this area.

Does it hurt?

It may feel uncomfortable as the carbon dioxide goes into the skin, which may feel like a “hot and nippy” sensation. But I would stress that all my clients have coped well during the weekly 30-minute treatments, and feel the results are worth the short-term discomfort.

You mention treatments here. How many will I need?

Every client is different and we always assess each person to create an individually tailored treatment plan. In general, I recommend a course of 6 treatments initially, based on one per week. After this, I review the client’s skin to assess if any further treatment is required.

Will I see the results straight away?

It takes up to 8-10 weeks after the initial 6-week course for the true results to come apparent. This is the amount of time it takes the collagen and elastin to reproduce and increase.

What if I want to know more about Carboxy Therapy?

You are welcome to come in for a free consultation with me. I can also perform a little test spot to show you what the treatment feels like. It really is an amazing treatment and we are the only clinic in this area to offer it.
