Here at the clinic, we perform skin Microneedling using a Dermica Pen. It is an excellent rejuvenating treatment, and works by using the skins natural ability to heal and regenerate itself.
We spoke to our specialist Skincare Therapist Saoirse Nevin, to get the low down on what the treatment entails and what you can expect afterwards.
I have been carrying out Microneedling treatments for 2 years and in that time I’ve seen some great results.
What exactly does the treatment involve?
After cleansing the skin of makeup and other impurities, I further cleanse the area with an alcohol solution to ensure the skin is as clean as possible. A topical solution with active ingredients is then applied which aids in the regeneration process and also allows the needles to glide over the skin more easily making the treatment more comfortable.
Using an automated pen device, the skin is punctured thousands of times causing micro wounds. During the process of healing these micro wounds, the skin generates new collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin is responsible for giving skin a plump youthful appearance. As we age these fibres deplete causing the skin to feel laxer and lines/wrinkles appear. Skin Microneedling stimulates the skin into producing more of these fibres.
Who can benefit?
Microneedling is not only for those who want to give their skin a more youthful appearance, but can also be used to treat post inflammatory pigmentation caused by acne or injuries to the skin. Acne scarring and other scars caused by injury or surgery can also be treated. This treatment is suitable for both face and body, which means stretchmarks can also be treated.
Is it safe?
This is a very safe treatment. The device allows the depth of needle penetration to be controlled, so different areas of the face can be treated with a suitable needle depth. You will be given an after-care advice sheet which you must follow to ensure your skin recovers as quickly as possible.
How will I look after treatment?
Immediately after a treatment your skin will be red and feel a little warm and tight. This generally subsides over the following hours. Some people may find they are still red a few days later and may have a small amount of bruising. This very much depends on the individual and the skin condition being treated. For approximately 1-2 weeks after treatment, your skin may feel a little tight and sometimes itchy. This reduces the more treatments you have as with each treatment your skin becomes more resilient.
Does it hurt?
It can be a little uncomfortable but varies according to which area of the body, and which condition, is being treated. Using the automated device does make it less painful and because the needle depth can be adjusted to suit different areas this makes it more comfortable on areas like the forehead and nose.
How many treatments will I need?
This varies between individuals, the condition being treated and their age. We recommend a course of 3 for general rejuvenation but you may need as many as 12 for some scars. The treatments are carried out at intervals of between 2 and 6 weeks.
How long before I see results?
It takes 8 to 10 weeks for the skin to form new collagen fibres, so patience is key. However most people start to see results around a month after treatment.
